The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Start of Winter, (Chinese: 立冬), the 19th solar term of the year, begins this year on 1:24am, Nov 8.

“立”为始，“冬”为终，这是属于冬季的第一个节气。

地始冻，水始冰，叶半青黄，万物收藏。

大自然将迎来新一轮枯荣。

Start of Winter is the first solar term of winter, which means winter is coming and crops harvested in autumn should be stored up.

古时，人们习惯把立冬作为冬季的开始。

现如今，气象学意义上，连续5天气温低于10℃才算得上入冬。

冷空气日渐频繁，南北温差大，是当下天气的显著特点。

In ancient times, the Chinese people took the Start of Winter to be the beginning of the winter. However in fact, the Start of Winter is not the beginning of winter in terms of meteorology.

立冬与立春、立夏、立秋，合称“四立”，在古代都是重要的节日，有“迎冬”“补冬”习俗。

Start of Winter, Start of Spring, Start of Summer and Start of Autumn was called the ‘Four Start’, and they were very important festivals in ancient China.

明清时期，进入农历十月，京城里家家户户必“添火”，与现在北方暖气供热相似。

近年来南方多地也开始尝试集中供暖，“靠抖取暖”正在成为过去。

In Ming and Qing dynasties, every family of Beijing must ‘add fire’ after entering October, which is similar to the Centralized Heating in northern China nowadays.

正所谓“立冬补嘴空”，人们劳碌一年终得闲暇，是时候用美食犒赏自己。

In old-time, Start of Winter was a good time for having feasts, since people finally had leisure after hard working in a year.

立冬是秋冬季节之交，谐音“交子”的饺子不能不吃。

而南方人更偏爱热补：鸡鸭牛羊，啤酒火锅，充盈的热量只为抵御冬天的严寒。

Dumpling is a must-eat food in the time of Start of Winter. Also, different kinds of meat, alcohols and hotpot are good choices to warm up in cold winter.

漫长的冬季看似寂寥。

但平和闲暇的日子，恰好可以整理思绪，沉淀时光

Although winter seems a lonely season, it is peaceful and free. Hence, winter is the best time to clear our mind and rethink the past.
